The following twelve (12) distinguished athletes, coaches, officials and administrators were inducted into the Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2010 on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Warwick, Rhode Island.
Alexis & Robin Boss
Robin and her late sister Alexis, graduates of the Lincoln School, both won RIIL State Singles Tennis titles and both were four-time All-Staters. Their accomplishments are unique in the history of RI Interscholastic girls athletics. Robin attended Harvard University, earning All-Ivy tennis honors while Alexis attended Dartmouth, also earning All-Ivy tennis.
Emily B. Carlsten
Emily Carlsten of Warwick Veterans High School was a All-Stater in Tennis for four years, All-State Basketball player for two years, All-State Volleyball player for two years, All-State Javelin thrower for three years and All-State Shot Put thrower for three years. She was All New England in shot put and javelin for three years. Emily is considered the most accomplished high school female athlete to ever compete in the RIIL.
Louis Lepry
Louis Lepry was an outstanding student-athlete at LaSalle Academy in the 1940's; All-State in Track and Cross Country. In his over fifty years in education, Lou Lepry is being honored for dedicating himself to athletics with action and perseverance in the East Greenwich School system as a teacher, coach and administrator.
Kathryn Marie Nagle
Kate graduated from Barrington High School in 1997 and from Harvard University cum laude in 2001. Kate was an All-State athlete in Field Hockey for two years, All-State in Indoor Track for two years and All-State in Outdoor Track two years and was named the Journal Bulletin Honor Roll Girl in 1997. Kate played Field Hockey at Harvard University for four years.
John Pagano
John Pagano, Cranston High School (East), competed in cross country, wrestling and baseball. He was an All-State wrestler becoming Coach Haig Varadian's first All-Stater in 1950. John went on to Boston University playing baseball for four years. John is being honored for his over forty years contribution as a high school coach, official, and his contributions in the RIIL sports of Baseball, Football, Softball and Wrestling.
Timothy Regan
Tim Regan of LaSalle Academy was a Providence Journal All-State Hockey goalie in 1966, 1967 and 1968. Tim went on to a distinguished hockey career at Boston University from 1969 - 1972. Tim played for the 1972 United States Olympic Silver Medalist Hockey team held in Sapporo, Japan and also played in the National Hockey League from 1972-1975.
Jane (Burgess) Schwechheimer
Jane Burgess was a three-time All-State Basketball player and most prolific scorer in Warwick Veterans High School history with 1546 points. Jane also played Softball with a career average of .400 as a hitter. Jane was named Words Unlimited School Girl Athlete of the Year in 1984. Jane attended St. Johns University and captained the 1988 Big East St. John's University Woman's Basketball team.
Paul Shawver
Paul Shawver was a teacher and coach at Ponaganset High School for 25 years. As the Ponaganset Girls' Basketball coach, he won 439 games and lost 157. His teams won 8 State titles and 12 Division titles. He was named the Words Unlimited School Girl Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1997. His teams won 6 consecutive Class A Championships that still ranks in the top 10 in theNational Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) record book. Paul is currently assistant girls' basketball coach at LaSalle Academy.
Dan Smith
Dan Smith, Coventry High School, is the only wrestler to win the Rhode Island State Championship for four consecutive years and New England Championship for four years. More remarkable was he never lost a wrestling match in four years of high school competition with 115 victories, no losses and 1 tie with 103 victories by pin. He was the Salutatorian of the Class of 1989 and was named the Providence Journal Honor Roll Boy in 1989.
Charles "Charley" F. Sweeney
Charles Sweeney was a four-time State Champion in Cross Country, twice All-State in Indoor Track and Outdoor Track at St. Raphael Academy. However, it is Charley's contribution, dedication and for being a driving force in the sports of Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track since 1960 that led to his selection as a competitor, coach, administrator and technology director. Charley is currently the RIIL Director of Boys' Indoor Track.
Dr. Kenneth R. Walker, Sr
Dr. Walker graduated from East Providence High School and Providence College. His educational experiences began at East Providence High School, Rhode Island College and Johnson & Wales University including a myriad of professional affiliates and community activities. Dr. Walker is being honored for his outstanding 27-year career as a high school basketball official and for the leadership he has provided. Dr. Walker is still active as an observer of officials in the RIIL. He is a role model by both veterans and young officials and remains a leader among his peers.
